Livery Updates – 2016 Supercars Bathurst Liveries

A day late and a dollar short as per usual, but with another ripper Bathurst 1000 having just concluded, here is a review of this year’s liveries.

#1 Winterbottom/Canto


Bottle-O celebrates 10 years as a main sponsor in the Supercars with this matte black stunner. The design is the same as the rest of the year, but the bright green has been replaced with a cool matte black and all white has also been removed from the car. The Bottle-O logo and other colour accents on the car are now a super reflective green, which looks cool, but doesn’t show off the logo very well against the black surrounding it. Shame they couldn’t get Castrol to go along with the livery as it sticks out, and not in a great way. The green does look great though and the entire livery is pretty mean overall!

#4 Davies/van der Drift


Erebus has a new sponsor on the #4 car in UltraAir. This is a great example of two sponsors working very well on the same car, with Penrite and UltraAir working in perfect harmony. The livery has a lovely white section along the side; rounded at the front and fading to black toward the rear. The design looks great and what helps are the minor colours in sky blue and light green. These colours, which gradually blend into each other, work really well in thin lines through the headlights, and the framing of the white section along the side. The subtle spike behind the front door is a nice touch too.

Really like this livery, and I’m very surprised that the gold, black, white, blue and green all work together to make a pleasant livery. Hope this livery sticks around til the end of the season.

#15 Kelly/Ingall


The design is unchanged for the Sengled Altima, but the big alteration is in the colouring, with the silver having changed to chrome. It looks nice in comparison to the usual, and in the angle above, you can see how well it works and blends in with the grille, which has always been in chrome on the Altimas.

#23 Caruso/Fiore


Nissan have gone with another retro livery for Bathurst, this time replicating the 1991 Skyline. It’s a near perfect copy of the original and as is often the case with retro liveries, it looks great. The simple three tone livery, with red on top, white in the middle and blue on the bottom is classic Nissan. The thin red line at the bottom of the white section is simple but sweet and the big plate and 23 on the side is a great throwback.

#96 Wood/Russell


GB Galvanizing is back on the #96 car for Bathurst in a new grey, white and red design. It’s a complicated little design with red and white tears along the side, thin fading white stripes on the hood and roof and a complex white/grey section toward the rear. However, what I keep coming back to is the grey. Whilst it’s interesting to see it in matte paint, I can’t help but cast my mind back to the uninspiring Sauber and HRT cars and feel as though this colour just isn’t quite suited to Motorsport. That said, this version looks a lot better than those liveries did!

#222 Percat/McConville


A big effort from Adelaide and the LDM team, with The Clipsal 500 sponsoring the Triple 2 car. Unfortunately, blending the orange and black livery with a million different logos makes the car look like a bit of a cluttered mess. The livery features the logos of the Clipsal 500 itself, along with Hunters & Collectors and Baby Animals, bands which will play at the race’s concert, with Adelaide tourism and Lift also on the car.

In the end there are too many logos with too many colours and perhaps they should have switched the usual orange to red, because I feel as though the red and orange clash a little too harshly, and could have brought some more uniformity to the car. However, the team will be over the moon, finishing on the podium today and spraying the bubbly! Congratulations to them.

#360 Gracie/de Silvestro


The Harvey Norman Supergirls were back at Bathurst this year, this time in a Nissan. The livery design is very similar to last year, although the colours have completely changed. The colour combo of white, black, yellow and grey is nowhere near as impactful as last year’s red and white and is thoroughly underwhelming in my opinion. This livery could have used a lot less white and grey to help it stand out more, as we know the design itself can work well. I also have no clue why Harvey Norman would choose these colours, considering they aligns in no way with their branding. Really disappointing overall considering their lovely 2015 livery.


Nice to see some new liveries at Bathurst again this year and a special mention to GRM, who kept their awesome retro Volvo livery from Sandown!


Livery Updates – 2016 Supercars Bathurst Liveries

Livery Updates -Nissan and DJR Team Penske

Nissan unveiled a new livery for Caruso’s Altima in Ipswich.

Caruso GT

This livery promotes the Nissan GT Academy, bringing promising drivers from sim racing to real life Motorsport championships. It’s certainly one of the best uses of grey I’ve ever seen. The matte paint is accompanied by small flashes of regular shiny black, which have red and white strips within it.

The back is mostly black giving a more even spread of the matte and shiny textures. Lots of sharp edges on this design but still look well coordinated. Great looking car.

DJR have surprised the grid with another change.

DJR BlueI believe this is a return to a colour palette used before and it works well enough. I do miss the pink though!

Went through this last time, but LDM are all black at the moment. There’s something about all black liveries that just makes the cars looks awesome.

They should be boring, but end up looking great. Just need a couple more logos there for the team’s sake.

Livery Updates – Amlin Andretti & DJR Team Penske

First up, it’s a preview for next season from Amlin Andretti Formula E.

After a straight sponsorship and livery move from Team Aguri to Andretti, we finally have the livery we deserved at the beginning of the season. The reflective blue remains, but only on the top of the car. The sides are now white and adds a much needed main second colour to the car.

It actually harks back to Andretti’s season one livery, but is certainly an improvement. The white and blue are split nice and cleanly by a solid red line from half way down the nose to the rear. The most interesting bit now is the cool red ribbon effect on the white section, which waves its way from below the cockpit to the tip of the nose. A very pleasing effort overall.

DJR Team Penske

Well it was bound to happen. Hog’s Breath Cafe are finally main sponsors on a car and it certainly lives up to my expectations. The pink actually isn’t bad at all and seeing as it is the main colour, the Hog itself doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb and looks kinda cool on the side there. Everything more or less matches and despite being the same old Penske design, this is one of the better variations they’ve used this year. Definitely won’t miss it out on track!

Livery Updates – Amlin Andretti & DJR Team Penske

Livery Updates -Team Vortex & DJR Team Penske…Again

An interesting one off livery for Craig Lowndes this weekend in Darwin. The new livery highlights the team’s support of the Clontarf Foundation and the livery design itself was made by Daniel Thomson, a local 14 year old schoolboy! Great effort from the lad.


Great use of a range of lighter blues and yellows, all of which complement the usual Vortex blue-green. The design itself is also a great example of Indigenous artwork, and a pleasant surprise to see it work so well on a racing car.

As for the DJR Team Penske machines, it’s the usual new sponsor colours, same design affair. The Mighty Mite colours work well as you’d expect from blue and yellow, although I think more yellow than black may have looked better.

The Taubman’s machine looks a  little more generic. It’s a logo that works well on the side of the car, but perhaps needs a unique design to get all of its colours on the car. Just a little tired of this design now. I’m sure making different designs for each new sponsor could be costly, but the same one in different colours over and over is just a little boring now isn’t it? Should take a few liberties to at least make some unique changes to the usual livery for each sponsor at least.

Round-Up – 2016 Indy 500 Field

The Indy 500 was run last Sunday and what a race it was! So unpredictable right to the end. If only it wasn’t on at a stupid hour in the morning over here so I could watch the whole thing live. Anyway, here are the many alternate and one-off liveries from the 500!

A.J. Foyt Enterprises

#35 Alex Tagliani

IndyCar Indy 500 Auto Racing

Not much to say about this one. Mainly black, with a red section along the side that increases in size from front to back. Some nice red flashes here and there, but then there are orange ones too which shouldn’t really be there.


Andretti Autosport

#26 Carlos Muñoz


A far better effort than the usual empty livery. Completely different colours in black and light blue, which go very well together. Interesting design that features a yolk over the cockpit which ends just before the nose number and goes toward the rear. It also juts out and carries along the top of the sidepods. The blue and black are split by a thin white pinstripe. He still has the Colombian flag on the front wing end plates, which surprisingly doesn’t match as well as on the other livery. Nice overall and gives and the colour scheme gives off a NEXTEV feel.



#29 Townsend Bell


This livery is odd. We have bright yellow on the top half, light grey on the sidepods and a blue stripey textured section on the side of the nose and front portion of the sidepods. A really odd choice of colours, seemingly due to the sponsors, but surely there was a better way to lay them out? As proven by HAAS F1, white would have worked better than light grey and the thin red lines separating all the colours only adds another colour to the already overflowing palette.

The very front of the nose, where the blue fades into the white on top is actually quite nice and if the livery was based around that, it would achieve a much higher rating. As it is, it looks like three liveries mashed into one and doesn’t work.



Andretti Herta Autosport

#98 Alexander Rossi


What a story! A rookie winning the 500. Absolutely awesome. The livery wasn’t half bad either. Nice blue and yellow combo in the usual Andretti design, although the black Castrol section doesn’t work as well as it did on the black and white livery.




Dale Coyne Racing

#18 Conor Daly


As patriotic livery as you could expect for an Indy 500! The same great design as the other DCR cars, but with the added twist of an american flag fill on the nose and engine cover. As cheesy as it is, it works pretty well.

The downsides for me start at the different shades of blue, which don’t seem to match. Considering how well the greens on the other car work, I thought they’d manage to make it work on this one too. Secondly, apart from the reds on the flag and elsewhere not exactly matching either, the flag design is placed on the car oddly, so it looks like it cuts into the normal red lines. Perhaps its just how it was done on this occasion and looks a little better here, but it’s a little off putting. Still appealing overall, without looking too closely at the details.

Also has to be noted that Daly’s usual livery was seemingly transferred to Brian Clauson.


#63 Pippa Mann


A little cliche perhaps to see the only woman in the field in a pink car, but the main sponsor in a breast cancer organisation is a great cause, so I can’t fault the choice. It’s actually a little refreshing to see this colour, since it’s very rare to see pink in any form of motorsport. The design is the same as the other Coyne cars, but is a little empty on the engine cover.



Dreyer & Reinbold Racing

#24 Sage Karam


This reminds me a lot of Pagenaud’s HP livery. Similar design with similar colours although you can’t confuse the big GasMonkey logo on the sidpod. Quite basic, surely they could have put a little more of that green on the car to help it stand out a bit more?



Ed Carpenter Racing

#6 J.R. Hildebrand


Not too plain for a white car. The dark blue accents look nice against the bright white, especially on the wings. The line along the nose is actually the same design as on Carpenter’s car, but works better with this colour combo and no outline. Really liking that shade of slightly metallic blue.


#21 Josef Newgarden


This is the same design as Hildebrand’s car with the colours inverted and a few different sponsors. Looks just as good, although I think the dark accents on the light background work a little better. Perhaps white wings could have completed the look.



KVSH Racing

#25 Stefan Wilson


This one is a little strange. Too many colours that don’t match I’m afraid. Yellow, orange, green and blue all on the same car? You’d be hard pressed to find a livery designer to make those look good, especially in those shades. The design itself isn’t groundbreaking, but feels kind of traditional IndyCar in a way (if you disregard the colours). Just unusual and unpleasant.


Lazier Burns Racing

#4 Buddy Lazier


A low key effort here. Mainly white with some bright red along the bottom half, sweeping onto the nose and the rear wing. It has a black pinstripe following that section, as well as some yellow on the mirrors and T-cam. Kinda forgettable.



PIRTEK Team Murray

#61 Matthew Brabham


Pirtek often lends itself to great liveries and this one is up there. IT’s a dark blue with black on the top, split nicely with a darker shade of red than I’d usually expect from a Pirtek livery. It’s simple, clean, has some nice colour trimming on the endplates and mirrors and is generally pleasing to look at. Missing something to make it incredible, but a very good effort nonetheless.



Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing

#16 Spencer Pigot


I like this colour combination, as I’ve mentioned before when referring to earlier Hunter-Reay DHL liveries. This one is simple, but it’s a pleasant yellow and split nicely from the white with a thin black line. May have looked nicer if the white section had gone all the way behind the cockpit rather than cut through it, but overall it’s a simple, neat livery.



Schmidt Peterson Motorsport

#7 Mikhail Aleshin


How many video game sponsored liveries have there been in world motorsport? Can’t name any off the top of my head, so it’s pretty neat to see SPM pull sponsorship from the new Doom game, the original of which I spent many hours on. It’s mostly black, and features a character surrounded by explosions in front of and surrounding the cockpit. I’ve never been a big fan of “images” being stuck on a car, but it doesn’t look so bad here.

I do wish they’d used a yellow or amber instead of red for the accents, to match the explosions for some colour. The rest is black and a little empty, and could have probably used a little more of that yellow/orange in one form or another.

Well this is a bit of a lazy effort. Plain white with sponsors in multiple colours. A bit of uniformity would have gone a long way on this one. Ugh.

#3 Hélio Castroneves

IndyCar Indy 500 Auto Racing

This is an identical livery to Pagenaud’s Menards livery, but with a different sponsor in Pennzoil, and a far more natural yellow. This is in fact a brilliant throwback to Rick Mears’ Penske machines that ran in the 1983 Indy 500. I’ve gone over the design before, but this colour takes it it another level. Really classy and despite taking its inspiration from a car three decades old, has been transferred to this a modern day IndyCar brilliantly.

Round-Up – 2016 IndyCar Field

I’ve been meaning to do this since round one, but I never thought it would be so hard to find some decent high resolution IndyCar pictures! After waiting a few rounds and doing some digging, I think the time has finally come to belatedly go through the 2016 IndyCar liveries. With the Indy 500 around the corner (next week), the timing is perfect! Or perhaps the worst timing, considering there will be so many new cars and cars in altered liveries. Oh well!

Note: I’ve decided to not include the one or two off entries.

A.J Foyt Enterprises

ABC #14 Takuma Sato, #41 Jack Hawksworth

Looks like an unchanged livery this season for ABC cars and fair enough. It’s a pleasing sweeping design with just about equal parts of red, white and blue. How the design sweeps up from the rear, along the side of the cockpit and onto the sidepods is great use of the car’s own curves and looks organic, for lack of a better word.



Andretti Autosport

#26 Carlos Munoz

This is a basic, mainly red livery. The engine cover is white and this carries on past the cockpit and half way down the nose. This section is outlined by a white pinstripe but is begging for a big sponsor beneath Honda. There’s a generic looking design on the sidepod which at least fills up some space. The saving grace for this livery are the accents in the colours of the Colombian flag. These bits on the front wing end plates, mirrors, rear of the sidepod and edge of the engine cover help to spice up an otherwise ordinary livery. The white rear wing is also nicely bordered by the red end plates and the silver nose, which is across all the Andretti cars, matches well.



Snapple #27 Marco Andretti

The same design as Munos’ car, just with the yellow and blue colours of Snapple. Again, it’s kind of lacklustre, and despite not having the empty feel of Munoz’s livery, is disturbed by the variety of sponsor colours. I get a Sauber feel with this, in that the colours have great potential, but the design is too basic.



DHL #28 Ryan Hunter-Reay

The DHL car has always looked brilliant and although this isn’t the best design they’ve used, it does look good. The deep yellow is a fantastic colour and goes really well with the red. The sponsors all work well together, but there isn’t much else to say considering the main design is the same as the others. As you can tell by now all the Andretti livery designs are the same, which annoys me a little, but at least there’s a large variety in colours.

Obviously the same design as the other Andretti cars, but despite having just about the fewest sponsors, it doesn’t look the emptiest! These colours wear the design very well, with the black looking very classy and the white contrasting well as you’d imagine. I like how the winglets break up the solid black along the side. The black, almost speech bubble looking design behind the Castrol logo is a bit strange, but isn’t enough stop me thinking that this is a good livery.



Chip Ganassi Racing

Chip Ganassi Chilton

My type of livery this this. The top half is all white, with the bottom half all blue and is split nicely via an unbroken line, following the curves of the car from nose to exhaust. The blue seems to fade from a light to a dark shade going down the car, although that may just be the lighting in this image! There’s actually some light blue the sweeps along the split and onto the rear wing end plate that is subtly and well placed. The winglets and end plates are white which contrast well against the blue. Have to also mention that Chilton has a fantastic helmet. Clean and simple, unlike most helmets these days, and the claw marks and other accents have been painted blue tom match the car. Overall, clean, simple but well executed.



Target #9 Scott Dixon

Chip Ganassi and Target have had an incredibly long relationship, going back at least 25 years from my quick and very informal research. It makes sense then that this livery is a straight up throwback to the Chip Ganassi cars of the late 90s and early 2000s. Despite the cars’ evolution since then, the lightning bolt looks great on the modern IndyCar. The bright yellow, which is thinly outlined with black, goes well against the red base layer of the car and evokes instant nostalgia, even for someone who has only very recently started to watch IndyCar regularly.

The many ‘Targets’ of varying sizes placed along the side of the car are interesting, but look more strange than attractive. Part of me would prefer a regular Target logo, but another part of me appreciates the odd design choice. The sponsors are all uniform in white, which allow for the lightning bolt to stand out further. Nostalgia alone isn’t enough for me to love this livery.



NTT Data #10 Tony Kanaan

Big change this season in that all the red has been removed, leaving a two tone blue and white car. It’s a great evolution, keeping the main sponsor looking fresh, rather than keeping the liveries looking too similar year on year. The colours work perfectly together, with a nice white rear wing, some neat flashes on the sidepods and white nose which tops it all off well.

This is a decent livery for me, but missing the wow factor. Charcoal is difficult to get right, but paired with a vibrant colour like this tennis ball green, it works well enough. The design kind of lets this one down though, with the thin grey lines over the green along the side not quite working, in my opinion. However, I think the livery may have been too plain without it, so it’s possibly the lesser of two evils. On the other hand, the grey on the top of the nose tip with the solid green on the sides looks great.



Dale Coyne Racing

Jonathan Byrd’s/Cancer Treatment Centres of America #88 Conor Daly

Well there’s your wow factor! Where do I start? First up, it’s not often you see multiple shades of the same colour work so well on a livery. The dark and the light greens match and contrast beautifully. The design harks back to the Minardi M198  with its diagonal lines across the side. The diagonal design is interrupted on the engine cover, cutting sharply toward the rear wing. Here, the CTCA logo cuts over the green lines, but rather than look jarring, gives the tree a three dimensional look which actually works very well, whether intended or not. The top of the nose is covered in white and is split from the dark green by a thin line of light green. All the sponsors work well together, although I kind of wish the Jonathan Byrd’s logo was dark green rather than red. I also would like to see the wings in white or dark green but overall, I love it!



Scouting! #19 Luca Filippi

This livery has the same general (lovely) design as the one above, but with more common blue and red in place of the green, it’s missing a lot of charm. It also looks a lot emptier without the third colour to fill up some space and complete the design. However, the black wings work a lot better on this car and match nicely with the black wheel rims.



Ed Carpenter Racing

Fuzzy’s #20 Ed Carpenter

I do like the Fuzzy’s cars of the last few years, the metallic green looking awesome on the cars and being paired well with the gold. This livery is a little more basic, with just a single sliver of gold starting at the nose, widening as it almost reaches the rear wheels. This section is outline with white and although it adds something to the car, it looks a little generic and has a Need for Speed decal look to it. Perhaps a simple, all metallic green (shimmering beautifully in the sun here) with gold winglets and end plates would have sufficed.



Fuzzy’s #21 Josef Newgarden

Mainly white here, with gold accents, which is different colour combination but works well together. In fact, the ‘white’ parts all over the car have a thick, brick like pattern in very light grey, which is quite interesting to look at. Whether a tribute to the Indianapolis Speedway or not, it sure is unique. The thin gold stripe along the side of the nose is a fantastic bit of minimalist design which adds some bold colour on top of a subtle and very unusual base design.



KVSH Racing

Hydroxycut #11  Sébastien Bourdais

Talk about unusual designs! I’m not sure what this is meant to be, possibly a reptile with the face on the nose or some faux superhero armour? It’s probably staring me in the face but I’m not sure what it is. I don’t think it’s better than the green version from last year and certainly not as good as the designs before that either. It looks like an image printed onto the car which is most often a no-no for me. A little gimmicky and perhaps shouldn’t have been used for a second year, colour change or not.

A pretty basic red livery here. The sponsor logo on the engine cover fills up a lot of space which would have otherwise made the car empty. Black is used well on the rear wing and winglets. It looks a little crowded with sponsors in some areas which detracts greatly from the livery. The slogan “Home of the Original Steakburger” uses a terrible font and whilst it’s no Comic Sans, it has no place on a racing livery. Brings down the livery by at least one star. That said, the black trimming on some areas of the car, for example on the front wing elements, is a great intricate touch.



#16 Spencer Pigot

Mostly red here, with the sidepods entirely in white.  It’s a nice way of splitting the colours, but the colours here don’t lend any excitement to the livery. Perhaps a darker shade or some metallic would have got this looking better than basic. The sponsors on this one are a little neater, but again everything is matching so no complaints there. I like how black is added on the wing, especially how all three colours are used on alternating front wing elements.

Arrow #5 James Hinchcliffe

There are actually a couple of liveries that feature gold on the grid but you wouldn’t really mistake them for each other because they are so different. The Arrow car uses a chrome, super reflective gold, which is night and bright. This is kept only on the ‘top’ side of the car, separated from the black on the rest of the car by a clean white line, front nose to exhaust. Black wings are a great choice here. The only thing I don’t love is the explosion or whatever that is behind the Arrow logo, which looks unusual and makes the logo a little hard to read in the middle. Perhaps it would be OK if the logo were outlined.



#7 Mikhail Aleshin

No main sponsor for the Russian unfortunately. You wouldn’t know it at a glance, but this livery has an almost identical design to the #5 car, but with the colours so drastically different, it disguises that fact very well. It differs in only a couple of areas that I can see, being the coloured wing end plates and the white stripe on the nose sweeping under the nose early, as opposed to ending at the tip. Russian colours perhaps at Mikhail’s request? Either way, it’s empty without much excitement, but it is clean.

Verizon #2 Juan Pablo Montoya, #12 Will Power

Penske’s liveries were pretty annoying last season as you may already know. They were all the same OK livery with altered colours depending on the sponsor. It’s almost the same story this year, although it’s disguised much better.

The #12 and #12 cars are all silver. McLaren’s livery this season and last is a dull charcoal colour that I can’t enjoy. This livery is silver, just a few shades lighter than the McLaren and perhaps a little more metallic, and is awesome. That’s the difference that even small choices in colour or shades of colours can make to a livery. This livery is just as basic, with just the single red line wrapping around the nose and heading toward the rear. However, it looks good! Perhaps Mercedes need to take note. Less is more.



Hitachi #3 Hélio Castroneves

Can you see the conformant design yet? The added two tone colour design of this livery keeps it well hidden. This design looks a lot like last years, with white on the top, black on the bottom and a red line splitting the two. It’s fairly simple, but it looks good. I’m not too keen on the rear wing end plate design, but perhaps it’s because it is on the inside of the end plates too, where it should really be black. The red trimming on the very front of the front wing looks great. No complaints with this, especially since the #2 and #12 are a different colour altogether.



Hewlett Packard/PPG/Menards #22 Simon Pagenaud

So by now it should be obvious that the designs are the same. This and the #3 are identical, but for the red swapped with an interesting turquoise colour, which brings some brightness and a change from the very common red. It’s an unusual combo, but I like it, not for that reason alone.

Pagenaud has had a number of sponsor and therefore livery changes already, with the PPG livery back to more traditional blue and white. I think this one is better, mainly due to the third colour being dark, which complements the other two colours much better.

The other livery is this incredibly bright fluoro yellow effort sponsored by Menards. Telefonica and Deustche Post eat your heart out! Thankfully, this design is a little more unique than the others, in more than just colour. Rather than a single white line like the Verizon cars, there are two pinstripes, one red and one black, following the same course along the car. There is also a second above the Menards logo on the sidepod, which is great. Did I mention the whole thing is covered in blinding yellow?? I do like it though. It’s the most unique and the best of the bunch. Also, it’s noteworthy that Pagenaud has changed his helmet colours to match the car’s livery which I’m warming to, especially since the design stays the same. Nice touch.

Livery Update – DJR Team Penske & HRT

Well, looks like Stone Brothers Racing have completed their return to V8 Supercars!

Vortex Pirtek

Not really of course, but after the return of a Caltex livery with 888, DJR Team Penske have brought on Pirtek as a sponsor for Phillip Island, so all of a sudden it feels very 2005 over here. Very nostalgic! Imagine they had used yellow rims too, and if Ambrose was still racing…

The livery design itself is the same design as before but in classic Pirtek colours and Coulthard having a red rear wing to Pye’s blue. It seems to be a Penske way of doing things, as the IndyCar team did the same thing last year.

I wonder what colour the car will be next week!

HRT Anzac

HRT have also revealed a livery update, this time to commemorate ANZAC day and support the ANZAC Appeal. It features the silhouettes of ANZAC soldiers walking beside a mountain range, that is also stylised to give a tearing effect. I’m not sure whether this is symbolic or not, so lets just acknowledge that this livery being a great touch from Holden. That said, it sort of blends in with other one off liveries that Holden brings out as many of them do end up looking quite similar.

LDM is the latest team to drastically change their colours early on. For Symmons Plains (awesome circuit by the way), the team will be sponsored by ABRO, an American company that makes various automotive products, hence the red, white and blue.

The livery is pretty basic, with some standard shades of red and blue and the main design being an off centre pair of red and white stripes along the top. This is supported by similar but smaller red and white lines along the sides under the main logo, which venture all the way to the front above the splitter. The splitter itself is black, which importantly breaks up the monotony of the blue and could have used some more elsewhere on the car.

It’s a little bit logo heavy and the I’m sure it may be confused with Bright’s BJR Commodore from a distance. It’s OK, but I prefer the old livery and who knows how long this one will last.

Round-Up – 2016 Formula 1 Field

The break is finally over! F1 is back with a bang (and not just in a positive way), with a memorable race in Melbourne. It finally seems we can stop complaining about the grid being so dark. It’s not quite 2000, but I believe the field is just about sufficiently vibrant. Let’s have an in depth look into this year’s liveries all at once, along with how I would improve some of the liveries.


Ferrari 2

Minus the white, I was kind of close with my mock-up. What I’m pleased with is whilst I wanted a dark Ferrari, the added white looks fantastic. It’s the biggest change Ferrari have made to their livery in a long, long time and so glad that they’ve finally made that call. There are a few things that annoy me, mostly the pinstripe along the bottom side of the car. I’ve warmed up to the wavy black section on the engine cover, but it still bugs me how different elements and shapes of the design slightly clash with each other.

Ferrari 1

The red, white and green Italian flag stripes on the front wing endplates, airbox and barge boards (are they still called that?) are a great addition, but again, the number of different, clashing design elements keeps rising. That said, I can’t help but enjoy looking at this car. Perhaps it’s the big change that sweetens the deal for me, but I’m very happy with this. It also looks great from the front, with the front and rear wings half red, half white and the white beside the drivers’ helmets.




If I was to make any changes, without deviating drastically from the actual design, it would be to remove the pin stripe along the bottom of the sides and allow the white to run all the way to edge of the engine cover.


Force India

I’m pretty disappointed that Force India retained their 2015 livery. They’ve got some great colours to work with and they’ve decided to stick with black and silver. It’s a dull livery that blends into the scenery. Dark liveries can look exceptional and a car doesn’t need to be brightly coloured to stand out, but this one doesn’t live long in the memory.

The silver used isn’t very bright and the fact it either has the surrounding black or the tarmac to reflect off of is what adds another level of gloominess to the livery. Perhaps a highly metallic, or sparkly silver would help solve this problem to some extent, because at the moment, you have to look at the car from very specific angles or in just the right light to even be able to distinguish the sidepod sponsor. The small flashes of orange and green are just fine and like I said above, you don’t need lots of vibrant colour to have a good livery, but it’s probably the only thing I can say I genuinely like about the car. I feel as though there should either be a gap between the green/orange lines and the silver all the way or no gap all the way, not both.




Haas 2

Improvements already at Haas! The silver has been replaced with plain white and the livery is all the better for it. It’s avoided being dull a la Force India, with the white opening up the car to some brightness, and contrasting well with the black and grey, whilst also complementing the red.

Haas 1

I do like the straight horizontal line along the side and how it sweeps up, meeting with the black on the way, which also separates it from the white along the top. The red line on the rear doesn’t bother me as much as it did at launch, but I wish it ended more sharply. The front is probably the weakest part of the livery, with the grey section on top not wide enough (I’d have preferred it to stretch the entire width of the nose section) and the red sort of joining in from nowhere. The endplates in red look great and the Haas logo on the side looks way better on a white background too.



Not much I’d change, apart from sharpening the red line on the rear and a slightly different interpretation of the design on the front.



Manor 3

I think a lot of people reacted positively to this livery purely out of desperation for colour. I can’t deny that it’s good to see orange on the grid again as well as the blue (orange, blue and white are a favourite combo of mine, albeit with navy blue), but it’s not a particularly strong livery. It’s very simple, which isn’t always a bad thing, but it does look rather empty. It could definitely use another sponsor or two!

Manor 2

This will slightly contradict my comments above, but I don’t feel as though these specific shades of orange and blue work that well together. Perhaps it is the black that is the unwanted colour in this situation and without it on the body of the car, the other colours would work just fine together. That said, the black section behind the driver’s head looks great, so maybe the answer would be no white. The Manor logo hidden in the engine cover also looks a little strange to me and it may have looked better if it a slightly lighter shade of orange, as opposed to a darker shade.

Overall it does look a little empty and despite bringing some new colours to the grid, the 2015 livery is a far better design.



What I’ve done here is removed the black from the rear of the car and extended the other colours all the way to the exhaust. I’ve added some piping behind the drivers head and airbox, where there was black before. The orange Manor logo on the engine cover is a lighter orange as opposed to the current darker orange and the logo on the sidepod fills in a big empty gap. Overall I feel this version is a little neater and has less colour clashes than the current livery.



McLaren 2

McLaren have a plain livery which, unlike Manor, doesn’t look so empty. There are a few sponsors there to fill in the gaps that are placed well, which make up for the lack of actual design elements and help to make the livery less boring.

The charcoal colour used isn’t my favourite, but it’s definitely in a sweet spot ensuring it’s far from ugly. I’m so glad to see the back of the stripes on the nose, and the red on top of the sidepods and the engine cover look pretty good. Shame that the faux-3D borders remain.

McLaren 1

The best thing about this livery is that everything is uniform. That alone gets a big tick from me. However, what bothers me most is the number on the nose, which is warped outward at the top. It looks as though it was designed to only work from one angle, but even front on it looks strange. Not sure why they decided on using that.




Mercedes 1

During the off season, we were told that the new Mercedes would have less black and more turquoise. I guess they kept half of their promise, with a little more turquoise, but the large areas of black remain, and this is what brings the livery down in my opinion. The turquoise design on the side is actually quite nice, but it fades into the black at the bottom, and I feel as though a sharp end would have been nice. Same goes for the shadow bordering that section. I’m also not a big fan of the smoky black on the engine cover.

Mercedes 2

The thin turquoise lines in front of the cockpit remain and are a nice touch, as is the full turquoise on the rear wing. The black endplates are just fine, but what this livery needed was less black everywhere else. Some black is probably necessary as a background for the silver Mercedes logo on the engine cover, but it doesn’t have to spread over so much of the car.

At the end of the day, a return to a 2011-2013 style livery would be a little more pleasant, although a more drastic change would be well received.




I’ve removed a lot of the black shadow sections in my version. It’s probably obvious by now, but I’m a fan of clean liveries (not exclusively though!) and taking out these parts give this result. Not done much else, but making these helped me notice just how few sponsor logos are actually on the car. They’ve done a good job of disguising that fact. It doesn’t look empty at all, so kudos for that, Mercedes livery designer!


Red Bull

Of all the cars on the grid, the Red Bull is quite possibly my favourite. The matte finish is interesting, and the deep navy blue looks great. What I like most is the Red Bull logo without the outline. It’s a brave change which works so well because of the super bright, almost fluorescent red that is used. It contrasts well against the navy blue and whilst it looks great in photos, it pops even more in the flesh, as I witnessed at the Australian GP.

Red Bull 1

The simplicity of this design is a welcome change from the complexity of recent Red Bull liveries. All it is really is a couple of Red Bull logos, the bull on the engine cover and a thin red line long the side of the car, but there really isn’t much I’d change. If anything, I’d remove the yellow outline on the bull as I don’t feel it is needed. Even the Total red on the endplates doesn’t bother me!




Renault 4

They said they’d be changing to a yellow livery for the start of the season and they weren’t kidding! It’s basically the same design as testing, but with the colours inverted and with a matte finish. I love the yellow used and it’s great to see another vibrant splash of colour on the grid. The matte finish is nice and in some angles it even gives off a pearlescent look to the paint, which I’m sure the team put a lot of effort into achieving.

Renault 1

That said, I’m torn as to which version I like better. The yellow colour is fantastic, but where the black design looked sleek and classy, this one looks a little empty and lacking in design. It looks quite plain and the nice little touches, such as opposite colour on the inside of the wing endplates, are missing on this version. However, the honeycomb design on the rear of the car is actually a reflective gold colour, which is a nice bit of intricate design.

Renault 4

The livery does look a tiny bit lacking in the end, but the choice of colour makes up for the absence of extensive design work.




Sauber 2

Unfortunately, Sauber too have stuck with their 2015 livery. It’s an incredibly underwhelming design in my opinion, although I know there are plenty of people that disagree with me.

The sidepod design is very simple, but I think what hinders it is the white that borders part of the yellow section. The blue and yellow contrast superbly and the white in between is simply a hindrance. The nose design has the same problem, but this whole parabolic section completely ignores the squared off shape of the nose, which is a big no-no for me.

The worst thing has to be the rear wing endplates, which have a number of different logos, adding way too many colours in one space, harking back to the days of the struggling backmarkers of the early 90s. It’s not a good look and oozes cheap and nasty.

Sauber 1

I actually contacted Sauber specifically about their livery, who were nice enough to reply to me! They did mention to me that the team’s colours are blue and white (so no plain blue and yellow car like I suggested), with yellow not extending beyond the sidepod, as this is all that the Banco do Brazil sponsorship entitles them to use. A limiting factor for them (and every team I guess) was weight, and I can only assume the simplicity of the design is to keep excess weight to a minimum. Cost also plays a big factor in that.

I was very humbled to get such a detailed reply from Sauber and for that I am thankful. While I understand how much goes into these liveries beyond just creative ideas, I do wish they would go for something more adventurous or at least something simple but classy.




I’ve removed the white from the sidepods to allow the blue and yellow to contrast well. The yellow on the nose is all white now, fitting with the team’s colours and I’ve added some more small white sections in front of the cockpit, behind the driver’s head and airbox and on the engine cover. These help to fill up the otherwise boring and empty car, without adding much weight. Interesting doesn’t always mean bulky and heavy. The rear wing is still a mess, but fiddling with the sponsor logos wouldn’t be realistic.


Toro Rosso

Toro Rosso is the team that consistently disappoints me year on year. This year, much like past years, their livery is too messy, owing to the busy bull on the engine cover, Red Bull logo which is oddly squished onto the sidepods, the picture of the Red Bull Cola can (full colour pictures almost never work) and the design in front of the cockpit. There is too much going on and little to no uniformity, apart from colours I guess.

Toro Rosso 2

Speaking of colours, the navy blue is a great, but something irks me about how it works with the red, white and gold. The gold especially is a dull shade which I’ve never liked (at least in this combination of colours) and thought that perhaps a chrome version would work better, but that would further add to the dull feeling as it would have nothing bright to reflect off of, but something different would be great. The little design in front of the cockpit is just strange and doesn’t fit in with the rest of the design at all. The car would have looked better without it. With their decent pace, hopefully they’ll pick up a sponsor that will dictate some of the livery and change it up a bit. That’s my only hope at this point.



Toro Rosso

I’ve taken some liberties with this one which is frustrating because I wanted to keep these as realistic as possible, but every time I fiddle with Toro Rosso, something creative pops up on the canvas. I’ve removed all the gold, which was most notable on the nose, but it really helps open up the livery. I’ve upped the presence of white and created an interrupted red and white striped design along the side. Also, the rear wing has a Red Bull Simply Cola that isn’t a can, which works infinitely better than a photo. However, I have kept the bloody bull on the engine cover and the obnoxious Red Bull logo on the sidepod, for the sake of real world accuracy.



Williams 2

Williams is the same once again. It’s still a great livery, but we are now at a point where one more year could be too many. However, if history is anything to go by, we may be out of luck. Williams seem to have a tradition of sticking with the same livery throughout a main sponsor’s time with the team. This meant mainly unchanged Fly Saudia and Rothmans liveries for four years, Compaq/HP for five and Cannon for a solid nine years. If this is anything to go by, we’ve got at least one more year to go, sponsorship contracts permitting.

Williams 1

The livery itself is nice with the sweeping Martini design starting on the nose supports, running along the sides of the top of the nose, sweeping up over the driver’s head supports, before blooming on the engine covers. It’s a lovely design and impressive considering it’s one long unbroken piece of design. The black endplates are a great choice, as is the black that runs sneakily along the bottom of the car. All the sponsors are uniform which please me immensely and helps to create what is a very neat livery.

That said and as mentioned above, I do hope they make some alterations next year, no matter how slight, in order to keep their livery fresh and interesting.



A mixed bag this year, with some gorgeous liveries and some boring ones, some bright and some dull. All in all, this year’s grid is certainly easier on the eye in comparison to last year. There’s always room to improve but I’m quite content for the time being.

Round-Up – 2016 V8 Supercars Field

Now that round one has come and gone, I think it’s a good time to give a roundup of the finalised liveries on the grid this season and perhaps a little rating for each. Nothing in too much detail as I’ve given most a full review, but a little something nonetheless.

1 Bottle-O

The Bottle-O Racing

Lovely vibrant green, even brighter than last year, which is unfortunately brought down by the clashing Castrol green. Bonnet is too crowded in general. Design is edgy in some places and curvy in others and while both look good individually, but I’d rather a single design style. Orrcon sticks out but can’t really help that. Monster too seems to have a different shade of green bringing the total up to three. However, main sections look great, as does the inside of the rear wing being white.


2 Monster

Prodrive (Monster)

Sleek with black as the main colour. Green highlights all match the Castrol green, but this time clash with the Monster green. Very simple green bits with a complex grey area which doesn’t seem to add much. Still a good looking livery but the mismatching greens drive me nuts.


3 Supercheap

Supercheap Auto Racing

Bright colours! Nice colour scheme with yellow as the main, and black and red supporting. A complex design that is quite suited to a V8 Supercar and thankfully no big Castrol logo on the bonnet. Again nice inverted colours on the endplates and (almost) everything matches the colour scheme.


4 Super Black

Not quite all black this year, with Ice Break as the main sponsor. The brown with the water droplets is an interesting novelty, but it doesn’t quite work. These sections also haven’t been integrated very well and therefore stick out in a negative way. The rest of the design is minimal but the overall design is a little incoherent. Tough to make that brown colour work.


Holden Racing Team

Great main colour this year, bright red, almost orange. The lion design is one of the best they’ve had and it entirely matches the rest of the design. Bonnet looks great and Mobil doesn’t look bad at all considering the colour clash. The green numbers, possibly for Monster, are OK, but I’m not convinced they totally match the car. Not a big fan of the Shark Bite logo.



LD Motorsport

Lovely shade of orange and overall, is quite similar to the HRT livery. The design is coherent and consistent and the colours match well, although I wouldn’t have minded if the silver was left out. A pleasing effort.


7 Plus Fitness

A little different to the launch design and I can only see improvements. Great colour scheme with an awesome shade of blue. The Plus Fitness logo works very well on the side, the orange and white bits complement the design well and the other black bits, especially the hood, are excellent. The Penrite logo on the rear quarter panel looks a little strange but overall, a great effort.


8 Penrite

Erebus Motorsport Penrite Racing

Again, different to the launch livery, but vastly improved. The colour scheme is perfect, with the lovely deep yellow, small flashes of red and the matte-ish black. The design is great, with almost uniform straight lines creating a great, consistent livery. The Penrite logo on the hood looks absolutely regal. Even the Hungry Jack’s logo looks nice on this!


9 Carsales

Carsales Racing

Another great, uniform design. Lovely colour scheme and while the design is complex, it does work nicely. Everything works well car with the Nissan chassis, using the curves nicely, although perhaps there’s a tiny bit too much going on.


10 Sengled

Nissan Motorsport (Sengled)

Quite a basic livery for Rick Kelly. Mainly red, with silver as the main supporting colour and some black lines in there too. It has an inverted feel, as if silver should be the main colour and the white/black lines crossing over each other are a little strange. Not bad, but definitely a middle of the road design.


11 Nismo

Nissan Motorsport (Nismo)

Similar yet different to the Carsales livery. Same sort of feeling toward it; complex, yet pleasant. Love the chrome red used, which reminds me of the awesome GRM livery from a few years back. Really nice overall.


12 GB Galv

Nissan Motorsport (GB Galvanizing)

Easily the least impressive of the Nissan liveries. Being mostly white, it looks plain, and the grey and red design on the sides aren’t very inspired. The front section is the best part of the livery in my opinion. If only the rest of the car was designed to match that section.


13 Team BOC

Team BOC

I don’t prefer this to the previous liveries, but it’s still a nice effort. It’s quite basic, but the colour scheme is nice and the design works nicely. The shadows next to the white lines annoy me, much like the McLaren shadow borders on their red bits, but that’s just nitpicking. Solid, but not ground breaking.


14 Freightliner

Also not quite as good as previous efforts. The Freightliner logo looks strange on depending on the angle, due to its oval shape and the silver and black flame-ish looking part leaves the rear looking a little empty. Undoubtedly Freightliner, but hasn’t really hit the mark for me.


15 CoolDrive

Team Cooldrive

Great little livery this one. The Cooldrive logo is incorporated into the livery well and really becomes the main part of the design. The colours are great and the two shades of blue work well together with the white. No real complaints with this!


16 DJR

DJR Team Penske

A great design here. The Shell colours look great on the car and the design is pleasant, albeit a little more basic than the previous year. It’s just a very nice design overall, but perhaps needed something else to make it perfect. Either way, don’t see it lasting longer than a few rounds considering they multitude of sponsorships last season.


17 Preston Hire

Preston Hire Racing

Another yellow car, but a much lighter, almost lightning yellow, to match the design. Very jagged edges here, with black and silver bits looking a bit like lightning as mentioned above, or perhaps shattered glass. A nice livery, slightly brought down by the Fuchs logos, but still great to look at.


18 Tekno

Tekno Autosports

Same livery as last year for Tekno and I can’t really complain. The Stix logo is weird but I guess we are all used to it by now. The multi-coloured off centre stripe is kind of cool, despite clashing with the orange, but I wish it was used on more of the car, like the Martini stripes on the Williams F1 livery. Above average.


19 GRM

Wilson Security Racing GRM

Big changes on this year’s car and I am very thankful for that. It’s a superb livery, with the added white adding some much needed variety to the car. The Swedish flag on the roof is still cool, albeit clashing a bit now. I wish that the black outline on the white was uniform around the entire car, rather than thickening toward the rear. Apart from that, it looks awesome. I feel guilty giving it this score knowing that improvements can be made, but it just looks so nice.


20 Red Bull

Red Bull Racing Australia

Great to see a significant change here. The spotty gradient is actually quite cool and it’s nice to see it uniformly placed on the blue and red bits around the car. The red trimming on the front looks menacing. Quite unconventional, but I like it.


21 TeamVortex


Nice to see this colour back on the grid. A solid design envoking a bit of nostalgia in V8 fans. Don’t love the way the white lines are positioned along the side, but it isn’t bad at all. The MTAA Super logo on the roof is huge, but manages to fit in. The lights should definitely be the same colour as the rest of the car, or red or clear. Does feel like it should be on an old Ford!

By virtue of having the most silver.


Overall, delighted to see such an array of vibrant colours, after what was another series of disappointing F1 launches. Thanks to for the images, since V8 Supercars don’t have a page for photos anymore!
